First Black Serves in the U.S. House of Representatives: Anniversary, 1870

December 12th, 2022

Joseph Hayne Rainey of Charleston, SC was sworn in as the first black man to serve on the United States House of Representatives. Born enslaved, Rainey went on to serve eight years in the House and was a respectable orator.
