Earth Day promotes public participation in activities organized to improve environmental conditions. A U.S. senator named Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a "national teach-in on the environment" after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Hoping to mobilize the politically active student community, he chose April 22nd (falling between Spring Break and final exams) as the official date.
Although Earth Day originated in the U.S., today it is a global phenomenon. Founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada is a national event. Throughout the month of April people are encouraged to get outside — playing and connecting to nature.

Concern over protecting the environment has not wavered through the years. In fact, it seems more than ever people are interested in doing their part to be eco-friendly on Earth Day and throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to approach like-minded retailers and service providers to tie into Earth Day events -- or general "Think Green" type promotions.
