President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service in support of the country. Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
There are numerous ways to honor the men and women who serve and have served in the Armed Forces. These include:
• Wear red, white and blue
• Fly the American flag
• Thank a man or woman who serves or has served
• Talk with or write to a military member
• Donate to veteran or military-based organizations
• Send care packages for those serving overseas
• Volunteer through the VA or a veterans service organization
