The sacrament of Reconciliation, or Penance, plays a significant role when a child or adult is preparing to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time, commonly referred to as First Holy Communion. When Catholics receive the Eucharist for the first time, they must first confess their mortal sins by completing the sacrament of Reconciliation. This is necessary so they can receive the Eucharist in a state of grace. Some Catholics continue to confess their sins before receiving the Eucharist throughout their lives, though that is not required. However, it is canon law that all Catholics must confess their sins at least once every year.
