Local Touch Gives News-Leader’s Holiday Magazine a Competitive Edge

CREATE: Each November, the Fernandina Beach News-Leader publishes a “Holiday Essentials” magazine-style special section. Their 2020 edition combined features from Metro’s Editorial Library with their own seasonal community happenings and localized articles. The News-Leader also incorporated images and layouts from Metro’s Holiday Advertising Service to design and sell the section. In addition, “Holiday Essentials” featured a pullout “Christmas Carols” songbook in the center, complete with sheet music and lyrics to favorite holiday tunes.
SELL: The News-Leader included a variety of holiday-themed ads and greeting layouts to generate revenue from this popular section, including content from Metro’s Holiday Advertising Service. They also ran banner ads along the bottom of the songbook’s pages, so each carol could be sponsored by a local business.
PROFIT: Publisher Foy Malloy tells Metro the “Holiday Essentials” magazine is a very successful product. Malloy credits the healthy ad revenue this popular publication produces to the community-focused articles, photos and event listings that lend it a uniquely local touch.
