May is Haitian Heritage Month. The celebration is an expansion of Haitian Flag Day held on May 18th, a major patriotic day celebrated in Haiti and by the Haitian Diaspora. Various events are proudly held in its honor, including, parades, cultural activities, ceremonial flag raising, and exhibits.
Haiti is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. Many of Haiti's landmarks dating to the early 19th century remain intact, and can be interesting starting points when discussing Haitian heritage during this month.
