According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the prostate is not essential for life. Instead, the role of the prostate seems to be to supply substances that facilitate fertilization. Enzymes like PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, are used to loosen up semen to help the sperm reach the egg during intercourse. In addition, other substances made by the prostate give sperm the energy to make its journey to fertilize the egg. If a man undergoes a prostatectomy and his prostate is removed, he can go on to live a healthy life but he will be rendered infertile.
