The History
Be Kind to Humankind (BK2HK) was created in August of 1988 by Lorraine Jara in Toms River, New Jersey. BK2HK will be 21 years old this year!
I created this celebration in light of a very upsetting newspaper article I read. The article dealt with the story of 2 young men, both in their 20s, who were boating in our local towns waterways. Apparently, they were in a small rowboat, which overturned. The story went on to say that as they clung to the overturned vessel, 2 young ladies in another boat plucked them out of the cold water. The ladies did not have a motor boat or a radio on board their vessel to call land for help. 2 maybe 3 other power-operated boats with radio antennas passed them by, refusing their calls for help. One passing boater reportedly said, We dont want to be bothered. Understandably, I grew very bothered by their reaction. When finally rescued, one of the young men died.
I was so devastated after reading this article that I felt something had to be done in honor and memory of the deceased young man.
I thought...they have Be Kind to Animals Week so why not celebrate Be Kind to Humankind!!! That was in August of 1988 and BK2HK will be 21 years old this year!!!
Along with the many radio interviews I have conducted as creator of this event, publicity has also included many newspaper and magazine articles and an abundant number of people who are promoting BK2HK on their website. If you go to Google and search for Be Kind to humankind you will find the websites mentioned and you will also find many on-line magazines and radio commentaries focusing on BK2HK. Please use the quotations (Be Kind to Humankind Week) when searching.. I have received inspirational replies from former President Ronald Reagan and former President George Bush Sr. I have also received replies from television personality Oprah Winfrey.
Of the utmost importance though, are the many positive e-mails of support we receive from people all over the world! Thanks to YOUR support, Be Kind to Humankind continues to grow.
This event began with one person, and has successfully reached and enriched many lives. With your continued show of support and enthusiasm, Be Kind to Humankind will continue to inspire other's.
