National Licorice Day celebrates black licorice, its history, health benefits and word renown as a delightful confection. Flavored with an extract of the licorice root plant, black licorice can actually come in just about any form of candy, but most often you’ll find it molded into chewy ropes or tubes. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Babylonians all dabbled in licorice as a health elixir or treat. Licorice as a candy started to gain popularity in the early 20th century.
