Emancipation Day

April 16th, 2021

Emancipation Day is a legal public holiday in the District of Columbia, but more widely acknowledged as the anniversary upon which President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862. This act freed 3,100 slaves. When it falls during a weekend, it is to be observed either the Friday before or the Monday after.
