April 22nd, 2021

Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is one of the largest observances in the world — with more than a billion people globally taking part. Earth Day is designed to promote ecology, encourage respect for life on earth, and highlight concern over pollution of the soil, air, and water.

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, who was then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. Nelson witnessed the devastation of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. By April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for the first time for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Earth Day has been a prominent celebration of the environment and conservation ever since. 2020 will be the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day.

For Earth Day 2019, the overall theme is: Protect Our Species. It sheds light on the fact that the rate of extinctions can still be slowed, and many of the declining, threatened and endangered species can still recover if people work together.

Any and all environmentally minded companies can grow their businesses with Earth Day tie in opportunities. Even retailers or other companies that do not have direct ties to the planet can highlight eco-friendly practices or use Earth Day as a springboard for internal recycling efforts or to showcase LEED certification and other environmental stewardship.
